Road Smoothness

You use the following icon to set how closely the road follows the terrain:

The start and ends of the road are designed to merge level with the terrain. This means the centerline will be the same height as the original terrain. If the road is cut into a hillside, you can still have cut on one side and fill on the other.

The following cut-away image shows how different smoothness settings affect the profile of the road. A high number makes for a smoother road (note the absence of the peaks to the right and left of the number at 150). A low number makes for a road that hugs the terrain (a setting of 1 perfectly follows the terrain). Even with a very low setting, there can still be cut and fill as it is the road centerline that follows the terrain. The much wider shoulders may be above or below the terrain depending upon how steeply the terrain cuts across the road; if so, cut and fill will be applied.
